Amesbury - It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew E. Reslewic, who left this world suddenly on May 28, 2023, at the age of 90. He was recuperating from a fall and was working so hard to get home, but ultimately his heart was just too tired. He was born and raised in Newburyport, the youngest child to his parents who had emigrated from Poland. He learned his independence and fierce work ethic from his mother Josephine who was widowed and raised four children during the depression. He graduated from Newburyport High School in 1950, joined the U.S. Navy shortly after and served four years. He became a carpenter and boat builder before going into construction. He worked for Perini Corp. for 25 years building major bridges and tunnels in the Boston area. He always had a strong calling to the sea, and upon retirement, he followed that passion and became a commercial lobster fisherman which he did for many years. Throughout his life he was a master carpenter, building homes including his own, custom cabinetry, and later specialized in the most beautiful Adirondack furniture you've ever seen. He was still building and selling these chairs past his 90th birthday. His pride in the perfection of his work was admirable and will never be forgotten. "Mitch" as he was known, is survived by his wife Marie "Marge" Reslewic. They were married for 67 years. He was "Dad" to their 6 children and "Jar" (short version of Dziadek which is grandfather in Polish) to 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, and "Uncle Mitch" to many, many, many nieces and nephews. Friends knew him as "Mattie" and he often had some colorful comebacks in response to that nickname. He was known to be quite a character and we are so lucky to be left with many great memories and stories that will always make us laugh. His funeral mass will be celebrated this Saturday June 10, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Church of St. Andre Bessette Parish 11 Sparhawk St. in Amesbury, MA followed by a gathering in the parish hall. Arrangements are by the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home in Amesbury, MA.
