The decision by the City of Beachwood to entrust a single engineering firm to determine the budget for the new playground raises serious concerns about wider financial mismanagement and overspending.

During a recent meeting to discuss the playground's price increase to $3.3 million, Recreation Department Manager Derek Schroeder was asked about the budget. He replied by saying, "We just asked them to wow us."

As directed, Beachwood's engineering firm, GPD, created the most extravagant design possible. No other firms or designs were considered.
